THANKS for listing the amendments and the results … unfortunately, there were some amendments that never got voted upon. For example, Betty McCollum (D-MN-04) had two amendments that do not appear to have been considered. Her prohibition of sponsoring NASCAR car was rejected (#82 on your list) but she also had one to reduce funding for military bands and one on banning funding on CUBA radio. When you consider that Sec. Gates has questioned the military bands, this should have been something that deserved a vote. (Read this commentary that describes more than $300 million the Defense Department spends supporting almost 100 bands and more than 6,000 musicians. BTW : did you know that military band members earn over $50k per year and get retirement pension after 20 years plus TRICARE healthcare that has not had it’s premium raised in over a decade.)
ReplyDeleteBesides the NASCAR vote, there were some other interesting votes.
The Pentagon has a number of advisory boards that are not needed … except as described here Congress voted against the eliminating them even though Sec. Gates wants to.
Frankly, some of the cuts are just plain stupid. I was not pleased with the weak Food Safety legislation that was passed last year (my commentary here but now the House voted to reduce USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service to 2008 levels … meaning 235 fewer inspectors. The problem is that under federal law, slaughterhouses cannot process or package meat without USDA approval. Without inspectors, slaughterhouses may have to reduce production or shut down, putting non-government employees out of work and raising meat prices for consumers.
I only saw one amendment that actully made a difference .. Congressman Anthony Weiner took NASA money and moved to the LowIncomeHeat program. Other some cuts on Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle (EFV) program and alternate engine for the Joint Strike Fighter programs, the Republicans passed whatever they wanted.
Keep the good work.
