Does football have a future?

Will Leitch, contributing editor for New York Magazine and founder of Deadspin.com, weighs in on whether or not it’s possible to reconcile a love for football with an understanding of the dangers of the game in this “Viewpoint” Web exclusive.
“I don’t think football’s going to go away as much as … you’re going to see the quality perhaps degrade a little bit in the next 20 years, because elite young athletes are not going to want to play football,” Leitch says. He explains that other major sports offer better career prospects for superstar athletes and considers the perspective of a teenage recruit: “Football, I’m hoping that I don’t suffer a major injury before I even get a chance to go to college for it.”
