“Stocks
are reacting very much as analysts predicted in the event that the law
was upheld. Hospital stocks such as HCA (up 8%) and LifePoint (up 4%)
are rising because the law is likely to result in increases in volume
for their businesses without added costs. Matthew Harper at Forbes http://www.forbes.com/sites/matthewherper/2012/06/28/obamacare-question-for-stocks-do-you-prefer-the-devil-you-know/ |

Mitt Romney has begun speaking |
11:54
|
Matt:
Romney:
"What the Court did today was say that Obama care did not violate the
Constitution. They did not say that it is good law or good policy" |
11:56
|
Matt:
Romney:
"This is now a time for the American People to make a choice. You can
choose whether to have a larger and larger government making intrusions
into your life... Or whether instead you want to return to a time where
Americans have their own choice in health care." |
11:57
|
Matt:
Romney: "If we want to get rid of Obama care, we are going to have to replace President Obama" |

less). Here is Tom Curry at MSNBC on Alvarez and the Court’s striking

Adam Winkler from UCLA has just posted this commentary for us: http://www.scotusblog.com/2012/06/the-roberts-court-is-born/ |

|
Kali:
Adam
says, "With this deft ruling, Roberts avoided what was certain to be a
cascade of criticism of the high court. No Supreme Court has struck down
a president’s signature piece of legislation in over 75 years. Had
Obamacare been voided, it would have inevitably led to charges of
aggressive judicial activism. Roberts peered over the abyss and decided
he didn’t want to go there." |

Jeff
Toobin live on CNN: "This is a day for Don Verrilli to take an enormous
amount of credit, and for me to eat a bit of crow - because he won, and
everyone should know that that argument was a winning argument,
whatever you thought on it. |

More
on Alvarez for those asking: " 'The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the
U.S. is greatly disappointed,' the organization’s commander in chief,
Richard L. Denoyer, said in a statement. 'Despite the ruling, the VFW
will continue to challenge far-fetched stories, and to publicize these
false heroes to the broadest extent possible as a deterrent to others.' "

Richard Epstein at NYU has a post for us as well. "Taxation and Regulation Under the Health Care Act" |
12:07
|
Kali:
He
writes: In the section of his opinion that deals with the Commerce
Power, the Chief Justice accepts the view that Congress cannot regulate
individuals unless and until they engage in some form of economic
activity. He therefore accepts in full the arguments against the
expanded reading of the Commerce Clause that were made by conservative
commentators. He did so, as is his habit, without stopping a moment to
analyze the enormous expansion in federal power that was ratified in
Wickard v. Filburn, which authorized Congress to regulate under the
Commerce Clause of the amount of wheat that a farmer could produce for
home consumption. Big government, we shall have, but not that big, after
all. |

Whatever the politics, today's decision was victory for people all over

the Supreme Court's decision to uphold it.
