Columbia University President Lee Bollinger announced the decision to bring back the military's ROTC in an email sent to students and faculty Friday.
The program was cut when Columbia joined a list of elite universities that cut ties with the military to protest the Vietnam War.
In more recent years, the university has cited the military's ban on allowing gays to serve openly as a reason to keep ROTC out.
However, Bollinger said the program will resume after the repeal of the so-called "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy goes into effect.
The decision came after the university senate overwhelmingly voted to reinstate the ROTC.
