Climategate: Can a Graph Tell a Lie?

Uploaded by  on Apr 20, 2011
Our fact-checker sorted through dozens of graphs and data sets to find the truth about rising temperatures in the wake of the Climategate scandal

  • The issue is the following:
    1. The tree ring data showed a decline after 1960 even though temperature were rising (a.k.a the divergence problem). Bad results.
    2. There are 150 years of recorded temperatures to compare to tree rings. 1/3 of this data compares very badly. This shows tree rings are unreliable for temperature measurement.
The IPCC graph was modified to give the perception that tree ring data was reliable. The scientists "hid" the bad data. Bad science.
  • @vossua Yes. the sun is getting hotter, but at a very very slow rate. The sun is only 4% hotter than it was 250 million years ago. We have satellites in orbit that tell us very accurately what the Total Solar Irradiance is doing. We know very clearly that current warming is not induced by the sun because we have been in a deep solar minimum relative to the 11 year solar cycle. The sun definitely has an effect but it's far less than CO2.
  • @vossua Again people, you have to look at all the data. No one claims that record low temps will disappear. But there will be fewer record lows as the globe warms. We already see this in the decadal temperature records. The ratio of record highs to record lows is steadily increasing.
  • @genettej Because tree ring data prior to 1960 going back to the mid-1800's do correlate well with recorded temperature. Prior to that there are a large variety of methods to check the validity of tree ring responses to temperature. Oxygen isotope measurements from ice cores, for one, are very close to actual direct temperature measurements (very accurate). Those can easily be correlated to tree ring responses for validation.
It's all in the published literature that no one bothers to read.
  • @vossua......the sun is not getting hotter, it is in one of its cooler periods right now. You'll have to think of something else.....
  • Jaeah Lee, your video misses out the main problem with the tree ring data. If tree rings after 1960 do not correlate to measured temperatures, how can scientists be sure that tree rings from hundreds of years ago correlate with particular temperatures? The correct, scientific, answer to this problem is to stop using ANY of the tree ring data in temperature reconstructions. Instead, these scientists ignored this problem and simply chopped the data that raised questions out of their graphs.
  • I wonder how people account for record breaking low temperatures in these past 2 years all around the globe, record breaking floods and snowfalls.
If one throws out one set of data and then now leans on only one other set of data which can not be verified for previous times, then to assume there was a 'status quo' immediately prior to recording data is blatantly dishonest and knowingly misleading.
I say get better magnifying glasses children...
  • The REAL question is: can you use TRUTH to tell a lie?
And clearly, proven time and again, the answer is a resounding YES!
THE ENTIRE SOLAR SYSTEM IS HEATING AT THE VERY SAME RATE.
    WHY?
Because THE SUN is getting hotter.
This is documented factual information climate alarmists refuse to speak about.
Did I say "the earth is not in trouble"..? NO.....
WE DO need to stop burning oil, coal and even natural gas...for MANY OTHER reasons.
THIS EARTH IS BECOMING A TOXIC WASTE DUMP to begin with.
