SENATOR COLLINS' STATEMENT ON CONTINUING RESOLUTION TO FUND THE GOVERNMENT THROUGH APRIL 8

March 17, 2011

U.S. Senator Susan Collins released this statement following today's vote on a three-week government funding measure.

"I voted in favor of the Continuing Resolution today in order to prevent a shutdown of the federal government, which would be reckless during this time of economic uncertainty.  But, I continue to believe it is irresponsible to continue to fund the government with short-term, stop-gap funding bills.  I am especially concerned that the Senate will adjourn for the March recess without having passed a Defense Appropriations bill for the remainder of this fiscal year.  Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has made it clear that Congress' failure to pass a budget that adequately funds our military puts readiness as well as thousands of jobs at great risk.  This is simply unacceptable.  That is why I have repeatedly urged the Majority Leader to immediately bring the defense bill to the Senate floor.

"Because we must ensure that our servicemen and women have the resources they need to carry out their vital missions, I have introduced an amendment to fund the Department of Defense to the small business legislation currently being considered by the Senate.  My amendment would adequately fund our armed forces for the remainder of this fiscal year, and the Senate should debate and pass this before adjourning."
