A collective bargaining bill in Columbus is attracting lots of attention here in Toledo.

Toledo's deputy mayor testified in favor of Senate Bill 5 Tuesday. The president of Toledo's police union and a city council member will testify Thursday at the Ohio Statehouse against it, a proposal that would do away with a lot of the contract negotiating rights of public employee unions.

There are demonstrations and counter-protests over Senate Bill 5, which some believe will challenge the very existence of public employee unions in Ohio.

Tough economic times are driving the debate, while union leaders say they've been nothing short of cooperative, knowing local governments cannot afford pay raises and perks.
