- Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano met Saturday with Afghan President Hamid Karzai to discuss the fight against al-Qaeda terrorists in the region.
Napolitano is on a multi-nation trip to address security issues. She began in Afghanistan on New Year's Eve, and next will travel to Qatar, Israel and Belgium.
“The Obama administration remains fully committed to combating threats of terrorism in Afghanistan,” Napolitano said after meeting with Karzai. “In coordination with U.S. and Afghan military forces, the dedicated civilian Department of Homeland Security personnel assisting the Afghan government with customs and border control have made significant progress in disrupting al Qaeda operations in the border region of Afghanistan and Pakistan.”
Napolitano also held a roundtable discussion Saturday with Afghan women and U.S. women serving in the region, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
Napolitano and Karzai discussed DHS efforts to combat smuggling of chemicals used to make explosive devices.
The two also discussed DHS deploments of border security and customs officials to the area to help train Afghan authorities. Six more officials to help in the training effort arrived with Napolitano on Friday.
