First elected in 2006, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is a member of the conservative Blue Dog Coalition but at age 18 was inspired to register as a Republican by Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, a fellow Arizonan. She switched parties in 1999 after realizing her views on social issues were more moderate than most Arizona Republicans.
