“The President’s Agenda May Be the Agenda of Washington, But Beginning January 5th, The Agenda of This House Will Be the Agenda of the American People.”
Washington (Dec 17)
House Speaker-designate John Boehner (R-OH) used his last weekly press briefing of the year to discuss the progress that has been made laying the groundwork for a new majority that will serve as an outpost for the American people and their desire for a smaller, less costly, and more accountable government. Boehner praised the efforts of transition chairman Greg Walden (R-OR) and his team in implementing reforms that will help open up the House and meet the people’s priorities of creating jobs and cutting spending. Boehner applauded the demise of Senate Democrats’ pork-laden ‘omnibus’ spending bill, pointing out that this victory for the American people occurred on the anniversary of the Boston Tea Party. Lastly, noting that Congress has acted to stop all the job-killing tax hikes set to take effect on January 1st, Boehner said that more needs to be done to reduce the uncertainty small business owners are facing, including cutting spending, permanently eliminating the threat of job-killing tax hikes, and repealing the job-killing health care law. These priorities are embodied in the Pledge to America, a governing agenda built by listening to the people.

BOEHNER PRAISES TRANSITION EFFORT, SAYS NEW MAJORITY READY TO SERVE AS “OUTPOST” IN DEMOCRAT-DOMINATED WASHINGTON FOR PEOPLE’S PRIORITIES:
“Beginning in January, the House is going to become the outpost in Washington for the American people and their desire for a smaller, less costly, and more accountable government. The President’s agenda may be the agenda of Washington, but beginning January 5th, the agenda of this House will be the agenda of the American people. The people’s priorities will be our priorities. We’ve laid the groundwork for action in the 45 days since the election, under the leadership of our transition committee, including Greg Walden and others. We’ve banned earmarks. We’ve arranged to have cameras installed in the Rules Committee. We’ve reduced the sizes of committees so that they can work more effectively and do a better job of oversight. And we’ve instituted reforms, like cut-as-you-go, that make it harder to increase spending here in Washington.”

BOEHNER DISCUSSES DEMISE OF SENATE DEMS’ EARMARK-LADEN ‘OMNIBUS’ SPENDING BILL:
“Yesterday in the Senate, we saw a victory for the American people when the so-called omnibus bill had an untimely death. You know, Congress was gearing up for one last big spending spree before Christmas, with thousands of earmarks, but the American people just wouldn’t stand for it. The American people spoke out, and the bill got scrapped. And I should note that yesterday happened to be the anniversary of the Boston Tea Party. This is a new thought for Washington, but you might be surprised what you can accomplish when you listen to the American people. It’s not enough, however, to just hold the line on spending. We need to cut spending. That’s what the American people want, and it’s what our economy needs. But there are still many in Washington who believe otherwise, who believe government spending is what spurs our economy and creates prosperity. But beginning on January 5th, the American people are going to watch their Congress do something differently, at least in one house.”

NOTING CONGRESS HAS ACTED TO STOP JAN. 1 JOB-KILLING TAX HIKES, BOEHNER SAYS MORE NEEDS TO BE DONE TO REDUCE UNCERTAINTY:
“Congress has acted to stop all of the tax hikes that were scheduled to go into effect January 1st. It’s a good first step, but let’s be clear: if we actually want to help our economy get back on track and to begin creating jobs, we need to end the job-killing spending binge, we need to cut spending significantly, and we need to provide more certainty to small businesses around America. Doing this is going to require tough choices. And we’ll start first by cutting our own budget. It will be one of our first votes. Then we’ll turn our attention to the rest of the federal budget and the job-killing policies that are denying economic growth and opportunity for the American people, including killing the job-killing health care law. We can’t borrow and spend our way to prosperity. The American people know that. And I think the government’s failure to recognize this has led to the uprising that we saw over the last year that helped create a new majority in the House.”
