In one of her last official roles as Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is planning to light the Capitol’s Christmas tree during a Dec. 7 ceremony on the West Front lawn, according to the Architect of the Capitol’s (AoC) office.

This year’s Christmas tree is scheduled to arrive at the Capitol on Nov. 29, after making a journey more than 2,000 miles from Wyoming.

The 67-foot Engelmann spruce will be displayed on the Capitol’s West Front when it arrives from the Bridger-Teton National Forest.

Looking out over the National Mall, the tree will be decorated with thousands of ornaments made by Wyoming residents along the theme of “Wyoming: Forever West.” The AoC’s office said that for the sixth consecutive year it will use strands of LED lights, which use little electricity and have an extremely long life-span, to decorate the entire tree.

“The Capitol Christmas Tree is often referred to as ‘the People’s Tree’ because it reflects the generosity of the state that sent it to Washington,” said Pelosi in a statement.

“This year, the people of Wyoming are showcasing their great state with a magnificent tree and beautiful ornaments. May the tree light the way for a blessed Christmas and a happy holiday season.”

The Capitol has had an official Christmas tree since 1964. This year, it will be lit from nightfall until 11 p.m. through Jan. 1, 2011.
