Obesity rates are reaching epidemic levels in the United States, and our children are being hit particularly hard. Childhood obesity has more than tripled in the last 30 years and today about one in three children are either overweight or obese.
Obese children are at greater risk of developing chronic health problems. In fact, kids are developing serious medical conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension at younger ages and in greater numbers than ever before.
The good news is that, in the vast majority of cases, obesity is completely preventable. One of the best ways we can curb this epidemic is by teaching our children good eating and exercise habits from day one. The Healthy Kids from Day One Act, which I introduced this week, would create a pilot program to test new approaches for encouraging children and parents to be more physically active, eat healthier, and limit the amount of time they spend in front of the TV or playing video games.
First Lady Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" campaign has done a great deal to draw attention to this critical issue. Congress should do its part by helping to support healthier, more active lifestyles in a new generation of young Americans.
