Officials have stopped guessing at the amount of oil leaking although some speculate it may be closer to 1 million gallons per day.

Don't let BP spin this into something trivial.

On May 7, environmentalist John Wathen of Alabama went out with a pilot friend to see the Deepwater Horizon mess for himself. Wathen, who lives in Tuscaloosa and works as the Hurricane Creekkeeper, tells us he's never seen anything like it in two decades of activism:
This is the first time in my environmental career that I've ever used the word "hopeless." But it's hopeless. You cannot stop it. This is going to hit all our shores. And it's not a question of if it goes into the Gulf Stream. It's when.
