Romney Nears Final Stage of Veep Search

July 09, 2012

"With the prospective vice presidential candidates fanning out as campaign-trail surrogates, Romney and his closest counselors have entered the final stages of selecting the ultimate surrogate -- a running mate," the Washington Post reports.

"There are seven weeks remaining until the Republican National Convention in Tampa, and Romney has a few important strategic decisions to make before then: not only who to name as a vice presidential nominee, but also when and how to do so."

Romney Campaign Officially Begins Veep Search

The Hill reports this morning that Mitt Romney’s campaign is off to an early start in formally vetting potential running mates.
According to the report, Beth Myers, who is conducting the search for the Romney campaign, has already begun contacting prospective veep picks.

The Veep Search Begins!

According to Talking Points Memo, The Willard Mechanism is starting the process in earnest, which only means that it is time to republish our research paper on the Veeps, you know, to help him out.

Romney Confirms Veep Search Under Way

In an interview with ABC News’ Diane Sawyer, Mitt Romney confirmed that his campaign’s search for a running mate is under way. His longtime adviser Beth Myers is in charge of the search.
“I’ve asked her to be the person who oversees the process of the vice presidential selection and vetting an analysis and so she’s begun that process and is putting together the kinds of things you need to do to vet potential candidates,” said Romney.
Romney said he has a deadline in mind for choosing a VP, but declined to state what that was. This weekend marked the first time the campaign talked seriously about a VP pick, Ann Romney said.

Let madness begin in the veep search

In a column last March, I indicated that Mitt Romney would be the 2012 Republican presidential nominee as I discussed fatal flaws with other potential candidates. Had the Republican powers listened, they could have saved hundreds of millions of dollars for their fall campaign. Romney will prevail, but it has been a bit tougher than I imagined.
In the spirit of NCAA March Madness basketball, it is time to look at the brackets for the vice-presidential slot on a Romney ticket. In that same column, I had predicted former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty for vice-president. Although he remains in the mix, I think he might be a bit too reserved for the role.
Unlike the NCAA field of 68, I’ll cut it to a more manageable 20 in four regions.
In the Mostly Fluff Division we have Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, South Dakota Sen. John Thune and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. This group gets by on looks, charm and basic persona.
In the Real Substance Division are Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, Maine Sen. Olympia Snowe, Pawlenty and Arizona Sen. John McCain. This group has demonstrated character and ability.
In the Totally Wacko Division are former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, businessman Herman Cain, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and media hosts Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh. The division title speaks for itself.
In the Swing States Division we have Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge, Virginia Rep. Eric Cantor, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell and Ohio Sen. Rob Portman. Any of these choices might bring along their home state vote.
My Final Four are Thune, Snowe, Santorum and Portman.
Thune wins the Fluff Division because he has not been in the national spotlight and, unlike Perry, Bachmann and Palin, he can count to three, knows the home state of Lexington and Concord and that there is a difference between North and South Korea. And, unlike Christie, he is probably not a big fan of New Jersey’s Democratic rocker Bruce Springsteen.
Snowe comes out of the Substance Division as the only female in American history to serve in both houses of a state legislature and both houses of the U.S. Congress. She is a national treasure who is thoughtful on domestic and foreign policy issues.
Santorum wins the Wacko Division. Listen to his speeches. He talks of throwing up in response to President John F. Kennedy’s Houston separation of church and state speech. He thinks President Barack Obama is a “snob” because he believes in college opportunities for everyone; that Satan is targeting America; and that women should listen to him on birth control issues. He picked “courage” as a word to describe himself in a recent debate; “sanctimonious” is a better fit.
Portman wins the Swing States Division because Ohio is critical to a Republican victory and, having served as President George W. Bush’s budget director, he adds fiscal discipline to a Romney ticket.
The final choice comes down to gender versus geography. Although Snowe would show that Romney might be more considerate on women’s issues than other Republican candidates, she has voted with Democratic senators a bit too often to suit many top Republicans.
I’ll go with Portman as a safer VP choice. He helped deliver Ohio to Romney in the primary, and might do so in the fall. He appears to be a very solid public official.
As a citizen, no mater how partisan I might be, I hope for the best candidates on both major-party tickets. At the end of the day, regardless of the outcome, the country needs and deserves someone capable of handling the top political positions in our country. I hope Romney has sufficient time to make a careful selection.

First Thoughts: The importance of Virginia

Bill Tiernan / AP
A person holds a sign along S. Independence Boulevard on Wednesday, July 11, 2012, in Virginia Beach, Va., as people wait in line for tickets to see the president Friday at Green Run High School.

The importance of Virginia in Obama getting to 270… Playing defense on defense spending?... The back-and-forth over Bain… And the larger point about Romney and Bain: It’s hard to extricate the two… Condi for VP? Don’t bet on it… Team Romney unveils newest TV ad… RNC goes up with its own ad buy… And “Meet” has Durbin and Kyl.

*** The importance of Virginia: Earlier this week, we looked into the electoral-vote importance of Colorado and Iowa. And now, we turn our attention to Virginia, where President Obama stumps today and tomorrow. Here’s why Virginia -- with its 13 electoral votes -- is so important for Obama: A win there, plus in Colorado, enables him to surpass 270 electoral votes without winning Florida, Iowa, Ohio, and Nevada. But a loss there forces the president to MUST win either: 1) Florida; 2) Ohio; or 3) both of Iowa and Nevada to get to 270. And that’s assuming, of course, that Obama holds on to all the states John Kerry won in ’04. Obama begins his day in Virginia with a campaign event in Virginia Beach at 12:45 pm ET. He then heads to Hampton at 4:25 pm, and concludes his day with a stop in Roanoke at 7:05 pm. Meanwhile, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) hold a press conference in Williamsburg, VA (where the National Governors Association is meeting) to pre-but the president’s travel throughout the state. And don’t forget: In 2008, the vote margin in Virginia (53%-46%) identically matched the national margin (53%-46%).

*** Playing defense on defense spending? In advance of Obama’s swing through Virginia today -- especially its military-heavy presence near Virginia Beach -- the Romney campaign and Republicans are trying to make Obama play defense over the looming defense cuts as part of last year’s budget deal. (Remember, of course, that Republicans insisted that defense cuts -- and not increased taxes -- be part of the “trigger” if the so-called Super Committee didn’t reach a deal on comprehensive deficit reduction.) So yesterday, the Romney camp released this statement from Virginia AG Ken Cuccinelli: “For President Obama to play budgetary Russian roulette with national defense is shameful. The damage to our local economy here in Virginia will be enormous.” Added Gov. McDonnell: “The President has put our defense budget on course for radical cuts that even his own Secretary of Defense says will be ‘devastating’ to U.S. national security.”

*** The back-and-forth over Bain: Yesterday, the Obama and Romney campaigns waged a furious back-and-forth over this question:
When did Romney really leave Bain Capital? In 1999? Or later? But largely lost in all of the scrutiny -- over SEC filings showing Romney still listed as Bain’s CEO after 1999, or a Fortune report on documents showing that Romney didn’t manage Bain’s investments after that date -- is this larger point about Romney and Bain: It’s very hard to extricate the two. In other words, there isn't a simple line of demarcation to say, "Romney left Bain Capital in 1999, end of story." Indeed, as the Boston Globe reports, Romney didn't "finalize a severance agreement with Bain until 2002." And it also notes that Romney classified his separation from Bain in 1999 as a "leave of absence" and not a final departure. As Romney adviser Matt McDonald told Politico, "[Romney] was on the SEC filings because he was still technically the owner, but hadn't transferred ownership to other partners.” Technically the owner? What’s more, according to the Globe, "state financial disclosure forms indicate he earned at least $100,000 as a Bain 'executive' in 2001 and 2002." (A campaign official says that payment was part of his retirement compensation agreement.)

Daily Rundown guest host Luke Russert talks about the Obama and Romney campaign's latest accusations towards each other. Russert also talks about a new CBS News interview in which Obama conceded that he hadn't done a good enough job inspiring Americans.

*** And the larger point here: The bottom line: Yes, Romney may very well have given up day-to-day operations of Bain Capital in 1999; as the Romney campaign puts it, he was devoted full-time to the Olympics. And that's the contention of fact-checking sites like the Washington Post and FactCheck.org. But the evidence also suggests that Romney's complete -- and official -- departure from Bain isn't as clear cut.

*** Condi for VP? Don’t bet on it: Well, we learned last night that the Drudge Report -- with its close ties to the Romney campaign -- still has the power to change the subject, at least for several hours. Its provocative headline: “Romney narrows VP choices; Condi emerges as front-runner.” But if you believe that Rice (who has never held elective office, who is closely tied to George W. Bush’s unpopular foreign-policy decisions, and who supports abortion rights) is going to be Romney’s VP pick, we have some oceanfront property in Nebraska to sell you. In fact, this tweet from prominent conservative Erick Erickson should settle things for everyone: “Multiple assurances from Team Romney tonight that Condi is not happening for Veep.” Meanwhile, a fundraising pitch from Romney Campaign Manager Matt Rhoades seemed to suggest that Romney’s VP choice isn’t happening soon. “Sometime between now and the Republican convention, Mitt will be announcing his choice for VP,”  Rhoades writes. “Know what's even more exciting? Every week until the VP announcement is made, one lucky supporter will win the chance to meet Mitt and his choice for VP.” If Romney is announcing his pick next week, then this contest doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

(45 DAYS I have my newsynose sniffing around and listening to all the rhetoric, my choice unfortunately is between a governor and a senator.  I do not think Romney will pick  anyone who is radical in thinking  because I feel he is too scared, cannot commit and can't make up his mind. There are five possible Veep candidates the rest too controversial, out of this world.

*** Team Romney’s newest TV ad: The Romney campaign is up with another TV ad this morning fighting back on the negative attacks it’s receiving from the Obama campaign. The ad quotes Obama during his 2008 nomination acceptance speech in Denver. “Because if you don’t have any fresh ideas, then you use stale tactics to scare voters. If you don’t have a record to run on, then you paint your opponent as someone people should run from… You make a big election about small things.” The ad concludes with this screen shot: “We expect more from a president.” But remember this little rule in politics: If someone is complaining about negative TV ads, that usually means they’re working…

*** And the RNC purchases its own ad buy: And speaking of TV ads, we learned yesterday that the Republican National Committee is going up with a $5.1 million ad buy in the battleground states of Colorado, Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, and Virginia. This is the RNC’s first TV buy of the general election. Why is the RNC getting into the act? Remember we told you earlier this week that the Romney campaign is being outspent right now because it can’t use general-election funds until after the GOP convention? Well, don’t be surprised if the RNC is now hitting the airwaves to help make up the difference -- and more.

*** On the trail: In addition to Obama campaigning in Virginia today, Marco Rubio and Paul Ryan attend fundraising events for Romney… Rick Perry stumps for Romney in Nevada… And Rudy Giuliani attends the opening of a Romney campaign office in Virginia.

*** On Meet the Press: On Sunday, NBC’s David Gregory interviews Dem Sen. Dick Durbin and GOP Sen. Jon Kyl.

Intense solar storm bombarding Earth now

Northern lights display could be amplified; no risk expected to power systems

An X1.4 class flare erupted from the center of the sun, peaking on July 12, 2012 at 12:52 PM EDT. It erupted from Active Region 1520 which rotated into view on July 6.
updated 2 hours 47 minutes ago
A strong solar storm is battering the Earth now and could amplify the planet's northern lights displays.
The solar storm is cosmic fallout from a massive solar flare on Thursday that included a powerful eruption on the sun, known as a coronal mass ejection. The eruption sent a wave of charged solar plasma toward Earth, which was expected to arrive sometime between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. EDT (0900 and 1400 GMT), according to forecasts by NASA and the NOAA-run Space Weather Prediction Center.
Space Weather officials said the solar storm could trigger a level G2 geomagnetic storm on Earth, a moderate-level event that could spark auroras at latitudes as low as New York or Idaho, after 9 a.m. EDT. Most northern lights displays, which occur when charged solar particle interact with Earth's upper atmosphere, are confined to high-latitude regions around the polar regions by the planet's magnetic field.

"Weekend auroras are likely," the space weather-tracking website Spaceweather.com wrote in an alert.
This weekend's solar storm originated from one of the most powerful sun flares to occur this year. The flare registered as an X1.4-class sun storm, one of the strongest flares the sun can unleash. It marked the sixth X-class solar flare of 2012.
The solar storm erupted from the giant sunspot AR1520, or Active Region 1520, which is actually a group of sunspots that at its peak may have stretched across 186,000 miles of the sun's surface, NASA scientists have said.
The Space Weather Prediction Center is keeping a close watch on AR1520, as well as several other active spots on the sun, for signs of more activity.
"All eyes are on the solar wind data to note the expected passage on Saturday of a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) from Thursday's solar event," center officials wrote in an update late Friday.
The solar storm is not expected to pose a major risk to satellites and spacecraft in orbit, or power systems on Earth, officials have said.
The sun is currently in the middle of an active phase in its 11-year sunspot cycle. The current cycle is known as Solar Cycle 24 and expected to peak in 2013.

Mother of Tunisian fruit vendor who sparked Arab Spring is arrested

TUNIS, Tunisia -- The mother of the Tunisian peddler whose suicide sparked the Arab Spring was arrested after getting into a scuffle with a court official, a family member said on Friday.
Salem Bouazizi, brother of Mohammed Bouazizi, whose death made him a symbol for the frustrations of many, said their mother was arrested for allegedly attacking the official in Sidi Bouzid, the central town where Tunisia's revolution began.
Bouazizi said his mother, Manoubia Bouazizi, 60, returned an insult after the court employee insulted her, pushed her and slammed a door in her face, refusing to assist her application for documents.
According to the AFP news agency, Salem Bouazizi said the documents she was there to sign would have allowed her to receive compensation from the government given to "martyrs of the revolution."
Tunisia declares curfew after riots"This is an insult to the mother of a martyr," he said, demanding her immediate release.
"My mother was humiliated. The authorities must learn to respect people. We're not going to let this go," Bouazizi told AFP.

The prosecutor opened an investigation and interviewed witnesses for hours following the incident, AFP reported. One witness said Manoubia Bouazizi had "threatened to set fire to the court," according to testimony obtained by AFP.
Tunisia Live, which describes itself as the first English-language Tunisian news website, reported that Manoubia Bouazizi could face a fine and up to a month in jail; this could not be independently verified.
There was no immediate comment from the justice ministry.
Self immolationMohammed Bouazizi set himself on fire on a street on December 17, 2010, infuriated after a policewoman confiscated his goods, and died the following month.
His act sparked a wave of protests that spread through Tunisia's neglected hinterlands to the capital, forcing veteran dictator Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali to flee on January 14, 2011.
Ben Ali's departure sent shockwaves around the Arab world and sparked uprisings that ultimately overthrew leaders in Egypt and Libya last year.
The families of those killed in the Tunisian revolution have complained that the government has done little compensate them or to improve the position of the country's worst off.

5-mile-long landslide in Alaska national park; warming eyed as possible culprit

FlyDrake.com via Glacier Bay National Park
Rock and debris from a landslide lie along five miles of what had been an ice-white glacier inside Glacier Bay National Park.

A massive landslide sent tons of rock and debris tumbling more than five miles down a glacier in Alaska, the National Park Service reported in an event that could be yet another sign of a warming world.

Located in a remote area of Glacier Bay National Park, the slide was so big it registered on earthquake monitors as a magnitude 3.4 event.
Officials noticed the monitor blip on June 11 but it wasn't until July 2 that a pilot passing over the site took photos that showed just how large it was, Glacier Bay National Park announced on its Facebook page.
"It's certainly the largest that we're aware of" inside the park, Glacier Bay ecologist Lewis Sharman told msnbc.com.
Larger landslides have happened over geologic time, Marten Geertsema, a natural hazards researcher for the Forest Service in nearby British Columbia, told msnbc.com, but it definitely was "one of the longest runout landslides on a glacier in Alaska and Canada in recent times."
Moreover, the force was enormous, Geertsema said. No one was present, but had anyone been there they probably "would be blown over by the air blast," he told the Associated Press.
Officials ruled out an earthquake as the trigger that caused part of the nearly 12,000-foot Lituya Mountain to give way, smothering the ice-white Johns Hopkins Glacier with dark rock and debris over an area a half-mile wide and 5.5 miles long.

Drake Olson / FlyDrake.com via AP
The landslide is viewed from above the Johns Hopkins Glacier.
One possibility is that thawing permafrost, which is ground that stays frozen for two more our years, caused the slide.

"We are seeing an increase in rock slides in mountain areas throughout the world because of permafrost degradation," said Geertsema.
"I don't know whether permafrost degradation played a role here, but we can be almost certain that permafrost exists on Lituya Mountain," said Geertsema, who reviewed aerial photos of the mountain and slide area. "Certainly this type of event could happen from permafrost degradation."
Many areas of mountain permafrost have been thawing in recent decades as temperatures warm, and some experts are becoming convinced that thawing is a factor in the frequency of rock slides, Geertsema said, pointing to data by Swiss scientists studying the Alps.

Marten Geertsema and Drake Olson
The section of rock and ice that slid off Lituya Mountain is seen here. Marten Geertsema estimates it was 200 meters, or about 600 feet, wide.

"It plays an important role," Geertsema said of climate change. "I think we have been underestimating the role it might play."
Sharman, the park ecologist, echoed that sentiment, saying he's heard from experts that "they would not be surprised" to see more such landslides inside the national park if temperatures continue to warm.
"Certainly we are seeing an increase in large landslides over the past decades," Geertsema said, citing his 2006 study that found between 1973 and 2003 the average in northern British Columbia increased from 1.3 large landslides per year to 2.3.
Moreover, he said, most of the slides in northern British Columbia are happening in the warmest years.
Landslides like this one can also be triggered by other factors, Geertsema added, such as a combination of large snowpack and a cold spring that results in a delayed and then rapid melt.
The slide itself was miles from areas used by park visitors, most of whom see Glacier Bay by cruise ship.
"You can't see it from a boat or the bay. You've got to be up flying. And it's not on a typical flying route," park service spokesman John Quinley told Reuters. "It would have been pretty horrific if you'd been camped on the glacier."
And it won't reach the bay for a long time.

The frozen ground that covers the top of the world has been thawing rapidly over the last three decades. But there is cause for concern beyond the far north, because the carbon released from thawing permafrost could raise global temeratures even higher. NBC's Anne Thompson reports for "Changing Planet," produced by NBC Learn in partnership with the National Science Foundation.

"The landslide is approximately 12-14 miles up the glacier," the park said on its Facebook page, and the glacier itself moves material towards the bay only about 10-15 feet a day. "So this debris may not reach the face of the glacier for many years," it added.
Officials are currently trying to estimate the volume of material that fell in the slide.

In 1958, a nearby landslide, this one above Lituya Bay and triggered by a 7.7 earthquake, created a wave hundreds of feet high that washed 1,720 feet up a narrow inlet. Two people on a fishing boat vanished and three others on land were killed.
One fishing vessel was able to ride out the wave, Geertsema noted.
"They looked below them and they could see the tops of the Sitka spruce trees way below," he said. "The other boat disappeared."
Last month's slide covered more land area than the 1958 incident, but even so it probably won't go down as the biggest one by volume in North America.
"We do not know the volume of the recent landslide on the Johns Hopkins Glacier yet, but it is unlikely to break the volume record," Rex Baum, a U.S. Geological Survey expert, told msnbc.com.
What is the record? That, said Baum, would be the 2.8 cubic kilometer rock slide avalanche from the May 18, 1980, eruption of Mount St. Helens in Washington state.

Let's go for 34!

As you probably already know, the repubs in the House of "Representatives" tried to repeal the Affordable Care Act AGAIN yesterday -- for the (depending on whom you believe; it varied by news source) perhaps 33rd time yesterday. They were, as they had been the last 30-odd times, unsuccessful, despite their blustering about how it's what Amurkans want, and how it's unconstitutional, and every other lie they could think of.

They spent three hours "debating" (read: lying) about the ACA, but in the end they didn't get the votes. AGAIN. Again and again and again.

Meanwhile, what else COULD they have done in those three hours?

I heard someone on a lefty talk show interviewing a senator from Vermont, where they're doing the ACA one better, going for single-payer at the state level and other such progressive (and smart) ideas. The interviewer asked about places like Texas, where Rick Perry is already saying Texas will opt out of the ACA. The interviewer added that it will likely cost Texas MORE to opt out than it will to just participate in the federal program. Such logic has never stopped Perry from making stupid-ass decisions before, though, so Texans will get screwed because they were naive and stupid enough to elect that moron.

Then I started to think about all the old talk about "Texas Secede!" (that was a popular bumper sticker when I was a kid in Texas) and the times Perry has brought up secession. I wonder if it would ever really happen, and not just for Texas but for other states stuck with morons for governors. Think back to pre-Civil War America, with some states deciding they needed to break off from the union. Would that ever happen again?

Imagine a U.S. divided into sane states and teabag states, where red states all join together, with liberty, insanity, and injustice for all those dirty illegals; and blue states could just join together and continue as the United States of America. And if I found myself living in a red teabag moron state, what would it take for me to move? (besides fear for my life)

Could it happen? I almost wish it would, so the teabaggers would just get the hell out and stop fucking everything up. We'd elect Jed Bartlett president, and everything would be awesome.

Unemployed Man Misses Job Interview to Save Baby on Tracks

An unemployed New York man came to the rescue of a 9-month-old baby who was almost hit by an oncoming subway train, costing him a job interview.
Delroy Simmonds was on his way to apply for a maintenance position at a warehouse when a baby in a carriage was blown onto the tracks at the Van Siclen Ave. station Brooklyn, according to Metropolitan Transportation Authority. The tracks at Van Siclen are elevated several stories above street level.
Simmonds jumped onto the tracks, grabbed the bleeding little boy and pulled him in his stroller to safety.
“I jumped down and I snatched the baby up,” Simmonds told Daily News. “The train was coming around the corner as I lifted the baby from the tracks. I really wasn’t thinking.”
Nevertheless, the Brooklyn father of two told said he’s no superhero, that any man would have done the same.
“Everybody is making me out to be some sort of superhero,” Simmonds said. “I’m just a normal person. Anybody in that situation should have done what I did.”
Simmonds told the newspaper strong gusts of wind were blowing 30-50 miles per hour, and a woman with four kids was standing on the platform. The wind blew the stroller onto the tracks.
Charles Seaton, spokesman for the MTA, says winds on Monday posed a threat for all passengers. Officials are now warning everyone to stand further away from tracks.
“We tell all people to stay well back from the tracks, and that would include with their baby strollers and carriages,” Seaton said. “That includes above ground and below ground stations, regardless of the weather.”
Seaton says as of now the MTA isn’t doing anything for Simmonds and his bravery.
“He’s a hero. What he did was an extremely heroic thing,” Seaton said.
One woman who was also waiting for the J train, 21-year-old Khalima Ansari, recalls the incident.
“The baby had a big gash on his forehead. You could see his skull,” Ansari told Daily News.
She says she called 911 immediately after Simmond’s heroic actions.
The baby was taken to Brookdale University Hospital and treated for minor injuries.
Simmonds didn’t wait around after the rescue. He says he would have done the same thing in any other circumstance.
“It was the fatherly instinct. I have two daughters of my own — 8 and 5. I was being a father. I would have done it for any baby,” Simmonds said.
Now, the father hopes to find employment.
“What I really need is a job,” he said.

Mitt Romney in February:

"I'm not sure which is worse; him listening to Reverend Wright or him saying that we must be a less Christian nation"

Does he stand by his comment?

"I'm actually going to --I haven't, I'm not familiar precisely with exactly what I said, but I stand by what I said, whatever it was."

What else does he stand by?

"Don't try and stop the foreclosure process let it run it's course and hit the bottom."

"Let Detroit go bankrupt."

"I will repeal Obamacare and I'll kill it dead on it's first day."

Reporter:
"Governor Romney, if you don't deport them, how do you send them home?"

Mitt Romney:
"Well the answer is self-deportation"

"Planned Parenthood, we're going to get rid of that."

"Corporations are people my friend."

"I was a severely conservative Republican governor."

"I'm not familiar precisely with exactly what I said, but I stand by what I said, whatever it was."
