Several candidates have expressed a desire to completely eliminate the Department of Education. Are the 50 individual states really in a good position to assume the role of financial aid for college students?
answered: I am one of those candidates who would eliminate the Dept of Education. We don't need a federal department to provide financial aid. If we are to offer federal financial aid for college students, it would be far more efficient and less costly to do so by way of block grants to the states.

@Gov. Johnson Do you think corporations influence on politics would be reduced in a free market without regulations on limiting campaign contributions like Gov. Roemer is proposing?
answered: While I share Gov. Roemer's concern about special interest influence, including corporations, every attempt to 'regulate' that influence via campaign finance laws has simply led to more creative ways to exert that influence. The key is to remove government from the business of picking winners and losers in the first place. The Fair Tax, an end to corporate welfare, and allowing the market to determine winners will help far more than greater regulation.

Many of the hardest decisions in the White House won't be consensus decisions. What will inform your decision making?
commented: The Constitution, of course, hopefully with a healthy dose of common sense.

Do you think the 'Occupy' movement is right that corporations are as oppressive as the federal government, if not more so?
commented: Corporate corruption is a consequence of allowing government to pick winners and losers, through the tax code, regulations, etc. The free market must be allowed to work, without 'management' by government.

Do you believe Intelligent Design should be taught in public schools?
answered: If, as we should, we get the federal government out of the business of telling local schools what to teach, questions such as this will be decided where they should be: at the local level by parents and school boards.

Is the current influx of Libertarian GOP candidates today more strongly represented than that of Green Party candidates in the 90's and early 2000's?
commented: Thank you, Buddy -- I am certainly not offended. It is no surprise that the excesses of government and the consequences of those excesses are leading to a greater interest in libertarian approaches.

@Gary Johnson: Since you've been excluded from so many debates, do you think it's fair that Huntsman and Santorum, who poll at < 2%, are included?
commented: I don't begrudge anyone the opportunity to be included, but the notion of drawing lines between candidates who are all polling within margins of error is fundamentally wrong -- especially when it is the media debate sponsors doing the polling. Let the voters decide who is credible -- not arbitrary debate sponsors.

As a libertarian president, how would you deal with a very anti-libertarian Congress?
commented: As governor, I vetoed more bills than all other governors combined. It worked. And I was dealing with a Democrat legislature.

Gov. Johnson, you believe in a woman's right to choose, but it's a state's rights issue. Isn't tyranny of the state as bad as tyranny of the federal government?
answered: Yes, I support a woman's right to choose up to the point of viability. But if government is going to make decisions about abortion, better those decisions be at the state level.

@Fred Karger: The Democrats seem more accepting of homosexuals than Republicans do. Do you ever find that your own party is hostile to you?
commented: Tolerance should be a virtue in a Republican Party which espouses limited government and individual freedom. Unfortunately, there are those among us who are selective in their ideas of individual freedom.

Can we really makes changes to anything - jobs, economy, foreign policy - without getting the influence of money out of politics first?
answered: I have said many times that government is for sale, and that must stop. Clearly, getting the government out of the business of choosing winners and losers is essential, and that removes the incentive for money in politics.

How do you plan on cutting spending in the federal government?
commented: I have pledged to submit a balanced budget in the first budget I will submit to Congress. No other candidate has made such a pledge, and yes, that means cutting spending 43%. It can be done, and must. If Congress doesn't go along, I will veto any bill which leads to deficit spending. As Governor of NM, I vetoed 750 bills and thousands of line-items, so I know how to veto.

Will the payroll tax cut do more harm than good in the long run, since less money is being paid into the social security fund?
answered: Instead of taxing incomes to fund SS, I support the FairTax -- a consumption tax that will fully fund Social Security without taxing incomes.

@ Gary Johnson - On a scale of 1-10, how likely are you to run as a Libertarian candidate in the general election?
commented: As I have said repeatedly to the media and others, yes, I am considering it. No final decision, though. What is important is the message that is not being heard -- a message that reflects millions of Americans' views.
